Brill joins the professional services firm as a National Advisor, bringing high-level experience in AI governance, privacy, and consumer protection from both the public and private sectors.

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP has appointed Julie Brill, a former Commissioner of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and a recent Microsoft executive, as a National Advisor. The move adds significant regulatory and corporate experience to the firm's advisory services focused on artificial intelligence, data privacy and consumer protection.
Based in the firm's Boston office, Brill will operate in a strategic advisory capacity. Her hiring comes as companies across industries navigate an increasingly complex landscape of AI deployment and data management regulations. Manatt is positioning its hybrid legal and consulting platform to service this growing demand.
In a statement, Manatt CEO and Managing Partner Donna L. Wilson noted that Brill's background offers a "unique board-level and C-suite advisory lens that will immediately benefit our existing and future clients."
Brill's career has placed her at the center of major technology policy debates. During her time at Microsoft, she served as Chief Privacy Officer and Corporate Vice President for Global Privacy, Safety and Regulatory Affairs. In this role, she guided the company's regulatory strategy on AI and digital safety and advised major customers on compliance.
Prior to her corporate role, Brill was an FTC Commissioner, where she was involved in enforcement and policymaking on issues of consumer privacy, data security, and competition in tech and health care markets.
"I wanted my next chapter to include a firm that understands how AI can solve complex problems across the industries shaping our economy," Brill stated. "I am excited to join Manatt in an era where every company is a data company and the governance requirements continue to change, making AI and responsible data use central to business strategy and public trust."
The appointment is part of a broader expansion for Manatt in the technology and data sectors. The firm recently launched an AI Readiness Assessment service designed to help organizations manage the risks associated with deploying artificial intelligence. Brill's arrival is the latest in a series of strategic hires aimed at deepening the firm's expertise in emerging technology.
