Black Glass, a first-of-its-kind CMO consultancy designed to empower modern marketing organizations as they navigate a rapidly evolving consumer, cultural and economic landscape, has announced the promotion of Clay Parker Jones to Chief Strategy Officer.
Jones, who previously served as Managing Director, Organization Design, was a founding member of the company which was formed to empower CMOs to influence culture and move society forward. In his new role, he'll oversee the direction and development of methodologies, products and structures for clients as well as Black Glass's own business development.
"Clay is incredibly adept at driving clients' businesses through real change," said Black Glass founder and CEO Katie Klumper. "His modern approach to strategy that focuses on real behavior change and tangible ROI is rare. His high-touch and super empathetic approach has been behind the build-out of some of our unique offerings. I'm excited to see where he takes Black Glass – its solutions and its clients – with this bigger remit."
The announcement comes as Black Glass continues to experience strong momentum. Since launching in 2019, Black Glass has reached major milestones, expanding its client base by 7X and achieving triple-digit revenue growth. It recently added Fandom, The Knot Worldwide and Weight Watchers to a client base that includes some of the world's most recognizable brands like Ally, BMW, Cadillac, LEGO, LinkedIn, Major League Baseball, McDonald's,, Tinder, T-Mobile and Walmart.
"There's little awareness of the incredible amount of pressure today's CMOs are under to drive team, brand, business and societal change all at once," said Jones. "No other role bears as much responsibility across key corporate performance indicators and we continue to see the role evolve – even over the past few months. Many CMOs are taking over HR and corporate communications, serving as leaders of internal employees, as much as external consumers. While it's exciting to watch the role grow, it also underscores CMOs' need for greater support."
"As a change agent for CMOs, we're here to take things off their plates, navigate complexity and increase their ROI in record time to get them the impact (and credit) they deserve," Klumper added. "With more people trusting brands over the government, CMOs need more advocates like Clay who can get in the work, advise and drive their personal and professional success."
Jones joined Black Glass from R/GA, where worked as Executive Director of Organizational Design. Before R/GA, he spent four years as president at August Public, a consultancy he founded with four colleagues. He also held several strategy-related roles at Undercurrent, where he led the company's pivot from a digital strategy hot shop to organizational design studio.
