Ian Hancock
KPMG International
Excellence in Leadership
For Ian, creating the best outcomes for clients is about deep listening and insightful questioning. It is also about building exceptional teams and capabilities.
Ian joined KPMG more than 20 years ago and has extensive experience in the provision of consulting services, including technology performance and governance advice, program and project management, technology assurance and business systems control advice.
During his time at the firm, he has worked and deployed projects in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States for a variety of high profile clients. One lesson he has learnt along the way is the importance of accepting advice. "A coach appointed to our executive team once asked me why it is that people often employ experts to give them advice only to debate it or ignore it." Since then, he has made a point of trying to support and empower individuals that he has sought advice from.
Ian's spare time is largely shaped by his family. He spends much of it watching their sporting achievements – a good way to relax, "although at times it can become reasonably stressful!" Whilst running offers another opportunity to unwind, Ian also enjoys playing music. Ian studied trumpet and continues to play. He enjoys all live music and often attends concert tours, among his highlights are Chris Botti (trumpeter), Cold Chisel and Bruce Springsteen.
What do you consider your greatest personal or professional achievement?
Moving from Australia to the U.S. in 2005 was both a personal and professional highlight. Being able to quickly integrate into a new country, learn the U.S. culture, build relationships and service a range of new clients – while also sharing the unique experience with my family – was extremely challenging and rewarding. It taught me the rewards of taking calculated risks and trusting my instincts.
What advice would you give a professional just beginning a career in consulting?
Say yes to every opportunity presented to you. The only way you learn is to extend yourself and put yourself into new experiences. The hardest things are often the most rewarding.
What have you loved most about your consulting career?
The diversity of clients, teams and assignments. No two engagements are alike. As consultants, we are in a privileged position to help our clients with their most complex problems and make a real difference to their business. I learn something new every day.
What's the best advice—personal or professional—you've ever received?
Seek counsel when making complex decisions. Diversity and inclusion of thought and ideas are critical to ensuring all perspectives are considered. Also, if you get it wrong, don't be afraid to acknowledge the mistake and change direction.
What does being honored as a Global Leader mean to you?
It is a privilege to receive this Global Leader recognition. I greatly appreciate the acknowledgment of my contributions, but to be an effective leader you need to be surrounded by a great team. I certainly could not have achieved my success without the support of colleagues and family. This is also a recognition of their support and contributions.
