Excellence in Leadership

Susan serves as the leader of the project management and engagement assurance team and as a strategic advisor to Huron's digital capability business.

What do you consider your greatest personal or professional achievement?

My biggest personal and professional worry turned out to be my greatest personal and professional achievement. I always thought about how I was going to juggle a demanding career with my personal life so my children could be successful and happy. I am fortunate to have two wonderful adult children who have created happy lives with their families and that is all I can ask for.

What advice would you give to a female consultant just beginning a career in consulting?

Run toward problem-solving with a business process mindset. As a consultant you are a change "guide." and you will rarely have all the answers. Make sure you understand the business problem to be solved and be creative in solutioning for the client uniquely. You will grow client relationships as a trusted partner because you understand their business and will build your value and reputation as a consultant who gets results.

What have you loved most about your consulting career?

It's important to find your "work home." and that happened for me at Huron. Culture alignment with your goals and passion allows you to thrive. Once I learned what was most important to me, I was fortunate to work in a company where I could really pursue solutioning in ways that mattered. It is important to me that I leave clients and our people better off than I found them — this mindset aligns with my company's values and principles seamlessly and has made the journey more fulfilling than I could have imagined.

What's the best advice—personal or professional—you've ever received?

I have been so blessed to have wonderful mentors throughout my career, but the best advice I have ever received came from my mom. She said don't second guess yourself. While her advice was centered around raising my children, it applies to both my personal and professional life. None of us has all the answers, so be bold, trust your judgement and learn from what follows.

What does being honored as a Woman Leader in Consulting mean to you?

I am full of gratitude. We get where we are because of the people around us and how they support us. I am grateful to have a support system – clients, colleagues, family, and friends – that has helped me throughout my journey to be a better person, friend, and colleague.
