With the rise of digitization, e-commerce, and social media, there is more consumer data out there today than ever before. Governments have caught onto this heightened threat environment in recent years, implementing new laws centered around data privacy such as GDPR in Europe and CCPA in California.
To help companies get a handle on these concerns and how to address them, global consulting firm Protiviti recently announced the launch of Protiviti Praas, a managed service offering to help companies assess their privacy needs and ensure they're in compliance with new and evolving regulations.
"Companies, especially small and mid-sized organizations, are struggling to find the right talent to achieve and maintain compliance," said Terry Jost, a Protiviti managing director and leader of the firm's managed security services. "Protiviti PraaS service was born out of client demands for a cost-effective, sustainable privacy solution for businesses that lack the budget and capabilities for a full in-house privacy team."
Different industries have varying data privacy needs, and the pandemic has brought many of those needs to the forefront. Telehealth, virtual learning programs, and the sudden proliferation of work-from-home have all exacerbated the need for a more deliberate approach to privacy.
Not all companies have the capabilities, or talent, to assess their needs and respond accordingly, particularly small- or mid-size companies with smaller budgets, so many are turning to outsourced PraaS offerings.
Such offerings automate many aspects of assessing and monitoring privacy issues, allowing companies to focus on their core competencies while remaining compliant with the latest regulations. PraaS helps clients create and maintain up-to-date data records, and manage privacy using the OneTrust platform.
"In the current environment where employees are working remotely all over the world, it's more important than ever that businesses have comprehensive policies, controls, and assessments in place and that privacy concerns aren't pushed to the backburner," said Curt Dalton, managing director and global leader of Protiviti's security and privacy practice.
