After several years in the insurance industry, an old friend of Giampaolo Scarso asked him to join him in running a newly-created insurance consulting practice in a multinational consulting firm that opened its Italian branch. "I immediately decided to take the job as I was attracted to the development of a new practice in terms of defining its operating model, value proposition, and go-to-market strategy. The opportunity for a much more client-facing role also influenced my decision."
Scarso says he has enjoyed being in the consulting profession for many reasons, but specifically because he gets to work with multicultural teams in an international environment. "I can take on new challenges while questioning the status quo," he says. "And I am able to deliver solutions that are valued and appreciated by clients."
Ask him what professional achievements and accomplishments he is most proud of over the course of his career and he'll say: There are many moments that he is proud of.
"In the first instance, helping form a risk advisory practice with a differentiated value proposition that enables Marsh to open doors for new client engagements and create deeper, more meaningful client relationships," Scarso says. "People are such an important part of our business, so next would be building strong teams of professionals who are approachable and responsive, demonstrate positive energy and passion for the business, and always act in the interest of our clients. I am very proud of how these teams strive to solve client problems and exceed their expectations."
The biggest factor to his success? "I always worked for great leaders who acted as mentors and coaches, teaching me how to learn from mistakes and how to strengthen my business, people, and personal skills," he says. "At the same time, I think that my focus on growth, innovation, and execution, combined with my team-player attitude, positively supported my career path."
Scarso says he is driven by a passion for the business, by thinking outside of the box, and by always looking for new solutions that rise to the next level. "I am never satisfied with what has been achieved so far," he says.
Q&A: What does winning Consulting's Top 25 Award mean to you?
Scarso: It represents a recognition of the hard work my colleagues and I have been doing for years. It is also an acknowledgment of the value we deliver to our clients day in and day out.
