Gavin Backos immigrated to the United States in 1998 with little direction other than knowing he was going to leverage his short experience in banking together with his finance and accounting degree to further his professional career. With much persistence developing a network, he says he was fortunate to secure a consulting role with PwC and has pursued his passion in consulting ever since.

Today, Backos is Principal in the Technology Management Consulting Practice based in Atlanta. He is a proven solution-focused leader with strong partnering skills having earned progressive responsibility for multiple aspects of business development, advisory, accounting, financial and operations management.

"Over the course of my career I have invested time developing individuals, offering them the platform of success I was fortunate to have," he says. "Witnessing their growth, knowing that a small piece of their success could be attributed to my coaching is the most rewarding accomplishment I have experienced. I know they will pay it forward, continuing this cycle of mentorship, supporting others in the pursuit of their career. This is by far my proudest accomplishment."

Providing visible value and helping clients make meaningful change in their business is most rewarding, he says. "I am mindful that finessing these concepts and helping our clients succeed requires hard work and dedication, which I am most passionate about."

Backos says he's also passionate about solving clients' needs and challenges. Client success and satisfaction builds reputation, trust and strengthens relationships, which is very important. Secondly, there is no greater feeling than helping others navigate and grow their careers, he says. "It's so rewarding to watch students graduate college and take their first assignment. And it's an honor to help support their continued development as they grow into future leaders," Backos says. "At RSM, we believe that our first choice advisor behaviors – caring, curious, critical thinking, collaboration and courage—apply to our clients and our people equally."

Given the impacts of the current pandemic, Backos says he is looking forward to finding unique ways to help clients overcome their challenges in this difficult time. "In doing this, we will not only create, but expand opportunity to deepen our relationships, help our clients and employees remain positive and stay active and engaged," he says. "I look forward to leading our firm, our people and our clients through some difficult months ahead and, hopefully at some point, we can all look back together and stand proud that we worked as a team and acted with care and courage. I believe there is a silver lining in every situation and working together we can overcome anything."

Q&A: What's been the biggest factor to your success?

Backos: I am really passionate about our industry and I try to master the art of quality in client service. I make every effort to truly listen to our clients to understand their needs so we can serve with focus. This is why my time at RSM has been so rewarding. We live our values to be first choice advisors and live our brand promise of the power of being understood each and every day. Understanding our clients' needs makes all the difference. Listening is a detail that is somewhat overlooked in complex situations, but it makes a significant impact on our client's success.
