Excellence in Leadership

Matt Moore calls his journey into consulting "a great and fortunate accident." As a fresh CPA starting his career with Arthur Andersen, Moore expected to spend five years in public accounting and go the finance/CFO route with a client. "A trusted manager pulled me into an advisory project, which led me to Andersen's risk consulting practice, which is the group from which Protiviti was created," he says. "Once I had a taste of helping clients solve problems, I was hooked."

Today Moore is a Managing Director with Protiviti and Global Leader of its Risk and Compliance practice where he has advised domestic and international banks as well as consumer finance, commercial lending and insurance companies on complex risk management, regulatory compliance and internal control matters for more than 20 years. He serves on Protiviti's Financial Services leadership team and is based in the firm's Charlotte, North Carolina office.

Previously with Arthur Andersen, Moore was a founding member of Protiviti in 2002. He has assisted clients with the enhancement of their risk management practices by developing risk appetite frameworks, improving risk governance practices, building executive risk reporting and transforming risk management and compliance programs.

"It has been a tremendous privilege to be part of the group that founded and built Protiviti," he says. "We are proud of what the firm has accomplished so far and look forward to what lies ahead."

On a more personal level, he says, he is proud of the achievements and accomplishments of those he works with—clients and colleagues—satisfying stringent regulatory commitments or reaching career milestones.

But what does he enjoy most about the consulting profession? "People. Building trusted relationships, learning new things, working together to solve problems… and doing it in a highly collaborative way," he says. "While the work can be challenging and intense, it is the people who make it fun and rewarding."

A sense of responsibility to make the most of the opportunities and capabilities he has been given is what has motivated him over the course of his career. "A strong desire to help people be successful by working collaboratively with them to solve problems," he says. "No factor is more significant than the love, support, encouragement and inspiration provided by my family. In addition, throughout my career I have been tremendously fortunate to work with outstanding people who have common values and a shared purpose."

Moore says that we are in the midst of unprecedented global uncertainty and like many others, he is looking forward to returning to many of the norms that have been necessarily suspended due to the pandemic—going to the office, grabbing coffee, traveling to see clients and teams. "I am also looking forward to helping clients and colleagues navigate through this uncertainty," Moore says. "There will be many challenges ahead, which represent opportunities to help people solve problems."

Q&A: What does winning Consulting's Top 25 Award mean to you?

Moore: It is humbling to be considered for this. I'm appreciative that my work has been of value to my colleagues and Protiviti's clients. More than anything, this award recognizes the incredible accomplishments and tireless commitment of the outstanding people and teams I have been so fortunate to be associated with.
