For the sixth time since 2009, Atlanta, Ga.-based Insight Sourcing Group finds itself among the year's Best Small Firms to Work For. The firm was not on the list last year.
One of the internal initiatives Insight had in 2018, according to Jake Wojcik, Senior Vice President of the firm, was a survey to gauge every employee about their own happiness and the general direction of the firm. The positives were noted, and the negatives were bucketed into themes to be addressed. Leadership shared the results with the entire firm and created internal advisory committees where employees willfully volunteered to join the committee where they felt they could add the most impact.
These committees addressed challenges such as internal communications, work flexibility and office alternatives, career development and training, culture and cross-business unit integration, and diversity. The committees then came back with ways to improve in each of these areas, which were presented to and approved by the leadership team.
"I think as a result we are seeing happier employees, as evidenced by this award and several other best places to work awards we've received in 2019," Wojcik says. "For our employees, it's validation that we are among the top consulting firms in the country and that they have made the right decision about investing in a career with our firm."
For clients, meanwhile, Wojcik says they benefit from the ripple effect the impact has on our employees in that happy employees show up proud and passionate about the work they do, and that translates into exceptional client results.
Over Insight Sourcing Group's 17-year history, Wojcik says the firm developed a unique culture that has allowed it to retain people well above the industry average—less than 4 percent attrition rate firmwide. "We feel like that creates a competitive advantage for us," Wojcik says. "From a client perspective, it creates a sense of security because one of the worst things that can happen in a consulting engagement is turnover."
On the survey, the firm excelled in the areas of Work/Life Balance and Client Engagement. Wojcik says the firm excels in those two areas because they are a strategic focus for the firm's leadership team. "They are two of the four core values that our firm was founded on—Focus on Client Results and People Matter Most," Wojcik says. "Our firm keeps a pulse on our employees' happiness and well-being through a monthly Work / Life Balance litmus test and immediately addresses any issues that raise a red flag."
How would you describe morale at your firm and why?
Wojcik: Morale remains high at the firm. We stay leading edge in our field and continue to innovate in the space of procurement by constantly innovating and offering new services that will drive value in our client engagements. A recent internal survey found that, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest, 76 percent of employees responded in the 7-10 range when asked how meaningful they found their work; similarly, 86 percent responded in the 7-10 range when asked if they felt valued for their contributions. And 88 percent responded in the 7-10 range when asked if they felt the firm listened and valued their feedback.
