Excellence in Client Service

Alex Miller says so far his career has included meaningful time spent as a strategy consultant, a private equity investor and an operator. He's learned some hard lessons as an investor and operator that have sharpened his sense for how to advise clients on achieving change and value. "Living with your own advice helps you develop a finer appreciation for how to drive transformational change in companies," Miller says.

Speaking of advice, Miller says he received some pretty good advice along the way—Always bring your "A" game; the competition never takes a day off.  "If we are going to be the best answer for our clients, we can never rest, never get comfortable or complacent, he says. "Our clients and we live in a world of constant disruption—if you are not disrupting, you are probably being disrupted."

Miller, Partner and U.S. Strategy Practice Leader for KPMG Strategy, has served leading corporate and private-equity clients in M&A and performance improvement for more than two decades. He has deep experience in transformational acquisitions and portfolio strategy, with emphasis on helping clients to develop, assess, and create value through innovative strategy and flawless execution. Miller also has served clients and investors in a wide range of industries including distribution, consumer products and retail.

"We are all very proud of the value that we are creating for clients at KPMG Strategy.  As a start-up within a large, highly respected advisory firm, the measuring stick for success and quality is very high," he says. "Our partners and clients have given us an extraordinary opportunity—and we believe that we are meeting that challenge by delivering higher impact and more actionable strategy."

The combined efforts of KPMG's partners, clients and teams have allowed the firm to achieve extraordinary growth and create fulfilling professional opportunities for consultants.

"I find great inspiration in the belief that a committed team can accomplish extraordinary things," Miller says. "Our clients approach us with their most complex problems—problems not easily solved. I find great motivation from the creativity and commitment of our professionals and their ability to work effectively side by side with our clients to realize meaningful change. We can accomplish great things with passion and effort."

To that end, Miller says that variety and pace help him sustain the energy required to enjoy consulting. While he has served many clients for years, problems, people and situations come in all shapes and sizes.

"Every day is a new learning experience," he says. "Our profession also continues to evolve—what was insightful 20 years ago may not move the needle today. Specialization, analytical tools and massive amounts of data are transforming the manner in which we serve our clients and create value. I have always had colleagues to challenge, teach, inspire and support me as we have evolved our practices into the cutting edge consultancy KPMG Strategy is today."

What's been the biggest factor to your success?

Miller: "Our mentors and colleagues shape who we become both as people and professionals.  Whether in strategy consulting, private equity or as an operator, I have benefited from bosses and peers that have taken time to help me grow and realize greater potential.  We all need encouragement, but we also need people in our lives who care enough to challenge us and help us to grow and improve.  I am extraordinarily grateful that my career has included bosses and peers that told me that I could be better and expected more from me."
