It's time, once again, for Consulting's annual check on the kids. Well, not the kids but the Rising Stars of the Profession, which is filled exclusively with Millennials, typically defined by those born between 1982 and 1996.

So, what do we make of these Millennials? They are, without a doubt, the hardest-working, most tech-savvy and information-hungry professionals we've ever seen. When we set out to identify The Rising Stars of the Profession, we usually think in terms of consultants who are poised to change the industry. But it didn't take too long to realize that this group was already changing the profession in profound ways, some we  probably never had envisioned.

These "kids" are alright, for sure. It's impossible not to be impressed with their achievements, their impact… and their individualism. Yes, the consulting profession is in good hands with this collection of talent we see under the age of 35. A few of them are in their 20s. Do you remember what your career was like in your 20s?

Millennials are the future; the future of their firms and the future of the profession. Trying to fit these Rising Stars into traditional talent and consulting models will not work; wind them up and let them go. The profession will not be sorry.

Meanwhile, in this issue we're also highlighting our Seven Small Jewels, which defy the odds in so many ways. But when you boil it down to dollars and cents, it really hits home. Combined, the winning  firms grew revenue by 56 percent, four percentage points higher than last year. What an impressive list of firms punching way above their weight.

Five of the Seven Small Jewels grew at more than 65 percent in 2018. How did your firm do last year? Check out all their stories, plus the Seven to Watch.
