Excellence in Influence

Nicole Sliger says 2018 has been a very exciting year for her, both professionally and personally. As she turned 40 this year, she was promoted to Partner at BDO. Additionally, in late August, she welcomed her third child—a boy—literally on the heels of winning a significant engagement for the firm.

"It has definitely been a very rewarding, yet busy year for sure," Sliger says. "Overall, I would say I am most proud of just surviving the day-to-day challenges of being a working mom of three young kids who is doing her best to fulfill the responsibilities of being a consummate partner while also juggling all the other home and family commitments. The struggle is real and also very rewarding."

Sliger has over 17 years of experience providing accounting services to private and publicly traded businesses. She assists organizations and their counsels with matters involving alleged financial statement irregularities, management fraud and compliance issues, as well as investigating fraud perpetrated by rogue employees or reported by whistleblowers.

"In the early years of my career, I was most proud of passing the CPA exam and achieving other professional certifications like the Certified Fraud Examiner and Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist," she says. "As I advanced in my career, accomplishments like testifying as an expert witness for the first time and bringing in my first client top the list of proudest moments."

For Sliger, the biggest factor to success is having a "village" to support her, whether it be to help do the work, help secure it, or assist with other responsibilities at home while you are out doing all of the above. "Without a core group of people I can rely on—my husband, my team, and family members—I don't think I would have the opportunity to succeed."

And success has come in bunches. Slider says she loves that she's always working on something different and interesting. "Our team is constantly learning something new, looking at an issue through a fresh lens, or noodling a strategy to address the unique circumstances of our client's situation," she says. "I also enjoy the intelligent, quality people at the firm. Being with BDO for 12 years now, I have worked with my colleagues and have witnessed their dedication, creative thinking and technical craft. I have the utmost respect for my team and consider them an extension of my family."

Q&A:  What does being recognized as a Global Leader in Consulting mean to you? Your firm? Your clients?

Sliger: Being recognized as a Global Leader in Consulting is an honor and a privilege to me personally. I'm not one to boast about what I've done and it is very humbling to know that my efforts are viewed by some as being impactful. For my firm, I think this is yet another feather in our cap showcasing the amazing things we are doing every day. I am very lucky to be a member of a very elite group working together towards the common goal of doing quality work to help our clients. For my clients, I hope it is viewed as a testament to my dedication and commitment to client service.
