Marsh
Excellence in Engagement
This past year, Marsh's Client Advisory Services went through a comprehensive global restructuring. The firm's four separate business units, which include Marsh Risk Consulting (MRC), Marsh Captive Solutions, Marsh Claims Advocacy, and Marsh Risk Analytics, were brought together into one cohesive group. "This new structure not only unified the CAS management team, but also changed how we interact with the broader Marsh organization," Michale Poulos says. "The four units previously had taken a fairly siloed approach to engaging with client advisors and addressing clients' risks. Now as CAS we can provide a more comprehensive experience and holistic strategies for our colleagues and our clients."
Poulos is the Global Head of Marsh Client Advisory Services. In that capacity, Michael serves as president of Marsh Risk Consulting. Michael also has responsibility for Claims Advocacy and is a member of the firm's operating committee. With the firm since 1993, previously Michael was a senior partner at Marsh's sister company, Oliver Wyman, based in the firm's headquarters in New York City. He was the head of Oliver Wyman's New York office, the leader of the firm's Financial Services practice in the Americas, and a member of the firm's global operating and management committees.
Poulos says many events and people shaped his career, but the experience that he's most proud of is the opportunity to have played a role in the development of Oliver Wyman. "When I joined, Oliver Wyman was a small boutique consulting firm. Together with colleagues, I played a significant role in building the business and ultimately integrating it into the Marsh & McLennan Companies family after its acquisition," he says. "At Marsh today, we think of risk management beyond the traditional brokerage transaction. This allows us to address a bigger and broader set of risk and business issues facing our clients, especially where new technology and cybersecurity come into play."
Over the past several years, Poulos says the firm has been at the forefront of developing technology and cybersecurity strategies and solutions.
"I attribute much of my success to the people around me. I was fortunate to join a company that was well positioned for success early in my career. More importantly, I met and developed a strong network of mentors who have sponsored me throughout my career," Poulos says. "The strength of this early network has informed how I've built my teams throughout my later career. I put a lot of emphasis on building strong teams by hiring not only the brightest talent, but also individuals who offer a diverse perspective.
Q&A: What does being recognized as a Global Leader in Consulting mean to you? Your firm? Your clients?
Poulos: I am honored to be recognized as a Global Leader in Consulting because I view it as a reflection of the quality of the Marsh team, which I am proud to be a member of. It also underscores the confidence our clients put in us. This honor affirms that they are getting the highest quality advice from one of the highest functioning consulting teams in the industry.
