Pete Guarraia /  Bain & Company

Excellence in Manufacturing

As a consultant, Pete Guarraia has worked in nearly every industry—from potato chips to semiconductor chips—and that, he says, always keeps the job interesting.

In his mind, there are three achievements of which he is most proud: The first would be building out the Bain Operations team to really thrive and being able to watch this capability area grow, he says. The second would be witnessing and contributing to the firm's commercial momentum. The third would be moving operational work from a necessary evil to a strategic weapon in clients' arsenals.

"In my career my proudest achievements have all been in support of my clients, whether it be creating huge commercial results or helping create long-term client career success stories," Guarraia says. "I was lucky enough to be a part of the team at Bain that helped design a new model for operational excellence."

Shifting to strategic outlook on operations has led to groundbreaking results for clients across the firm, he says. "I will always consider it to be one of my greatest professional achievements."

Guarraia is a Partner in Bain & Company's Chicago office. He is a senior leader in the firm's global Performance Improvement practice, where he leads the global Supply Chain practice, as well as the Chemicals, Manufacturing and Sustained Cost Transformation practices in North America. He has more than 20 years of management consulting experience, advising industry leaders on their biggest opportunities and challenges.

"At the end of the day it's all about creating a real results story for my clients both personally and professionally," he says. "Someone once said to me, 'Don't seek short term goals; don't seek personal wealth; don't seek transitory value. Find the meaning in your work and make that the roadster for how you drive your career.' Years later and I am still motivated by searching for projects and cases where I can accomplish meaningful work."

He has deep functional experience leading operations improvement efforts in the industrial space, including chemicals, aerospace and defense and semiconductors. He says he most enjoys the endless variabilities of clients that he's engaged with at Bain over the years.

"As consultants we are constantly trying to stay one step ahead of our clients and their ever-changing business needs," Guarraia says. "I am a life-long learner, and there is no better industry for someone who likes the 'strapped to the front of the locomotive' feel."

As far as being recognized as one of the Top 25 Consultants, Guarraia says he is humbled. "I am just one among many extraordinary people at Bain who could have easily been answering these questions."

Q&A: What's been the biggest factor to your success?

Guarraia: "Every day I make it my mission to show up early and have a good attitude. Along with that, material in my success is the support and insights of the colleagues that I've been fortunate enough to work with over the years. Bain truly cultivates a culture of excellence and I am fortunate enough to work with brilliant and inspiring people day in and day out. I am also fortunate enough to work with clients who are willing to take risk and innovate in their industries."
