Excellence in Leadership

Daniel Garrett's seen a lot over his 40 years in the consulting profession. That span covers all sorts of roles and responsibilities, but currently he's PwC Partner & U.S. Technology Consulting Leader, and Health Technology (HIT) Consulting Leader overseeing all of PwC's Technology Consulting functions and coordinating across the PwC network.

"Consulting has changed so much, and I'm truly proud to see our teams working in a way that breaks from the traditional consulting model," Garret says. "Instead of having a series of handoffs, our technology teams work side by side with our counterparts in strategy and risk to create innovative applications and tools that make a real difference for pharmaceutical companies and patients. It's truly integrated."

Most recently, Garrett has focused on the convergence of the health sectors around the digital patient intersections and informatics made possible through Analytics and the move to Value Based Care.

"We've helped our healthcare clients, not only in pharma but also in the providers and payers of the world, reinvent the patient experience," he says. "Over the years, our healthcare technology team has used digital and analytics solutions to improve how healthcare was delivered, paid for and consumed, shift how the population focused on wellness, and help the pharmaceutical industry bring medicine and medical devices to society more safely and effectively."

When he walks into a doctor's office and see that patients don't have to spend 45 minutes with a clipboard, or hear about people having access to doctors at home with virtual visits, he's proud to have been a part of the team that has helped bring those possibilities to life, he says.

With the advent of emerging technology like blockchain, AI, the cloud, and drones, Garrett's most proud of how he and his team have been able to use new technologies, along with advanced analytics to create never-before-seen business models and use cases.

"These unique offerings, solutions we would have never imagined possible even 10 years ago, are producing differentiated and sustainable value for clients," he says. "Over the last 12 months, we have sharpened our focus around real and sustainable transformation in all of the vertical markets that we serve, and these new business models, are part of driving the new economy."

As far as being recognized as one of the Top 25 Consultants, Garrett says, most importantly, this should not go to his head or anyone else's. "What we were able to do was a pure 100 percent team effort. I was not the only leader and there were many (myself included) that were doers," he says. "For our clients, I offer my deepest thanks as (especially the first few) they had faith and trust in us even when we were a small practice. They gave us the opportunity to deliver and for that I am sincerely grateful."

Q&A: What do you enjoy most about your job and the consulting profession?

Garrett: "I love to see clients, Partners, and staff grow. That is why the profession exists. We are not hired to do things that are easy as if the task was easy they would not need us. People hire us to get things done and to learn from us. Usually you can do both. I also enjoy the sense of accomplishment … especially when you can see how the work impacts lives with new skills and capabilities at scale."
