Excellence in Healthcare
Dan May has always been driven by the need to understand the complex. While pursuing his undergraduate degree in industrial engineering, he had the opportunity to work in a health system. Once he learned how complicated the healthcare processes and systems were, he says he was hooked. "Every day I learn something new about healthcare strategy and operations," May says. "Knowing there is always more to learn keeps me motivated."
May, Managing Director, Healthcare for Huron, has over 25 years of experience managing large performance improvement consulting engagements for integrated health systems, academic medical centers, and children's hospitals.
Huron's healthcare business has undergone a significant transformation in the last 12 months, he says. The practice has worked diligently to cross-train and integrate the firm's previously siloed teams into one cohesive business unit. "The dramatic transformation has enhanced our ability to help our clients navigate disruption," May says. "I am most proud of our team for embracing change to make such a necessary transition for our business, but, most importantly, for our clients."
May says when Huron guides clients through transformational change, "we're helping them improve their ability to create better health outcomes for patients and better serve their communities. I take great pride in knowing our work in performance improvement often results in real-life benefits for the people who need them most—the patients."
Ask him what he enjoys most about consulting and he'll say it's, by far, working with people—both clients and other consultants. On the client side, he enjoys listening to their challenges and designing solutions that will address their most pressing needs.
Meanwhile, on the consultant side, "I enjoy helping younger consultants shape their careers, learn new skills and grow into leadership roles," he says. "I'm always proud to see younger consultants I've worked with in the past grow and develop into leaders in the market and their organizations. I love coaching and encouraging people to achieve more; seeing them rise in the ranks and succeed makes me proud to have been a part of their journey."
As far as being named a Top 25, May says receiving the award is very humbling. "I hope that winning this award will motivate our younger consultants to pursue new goals and continue to push Huron into the future," he says. "I also hope this award demonstrates that we care deeply about our clients and our desire to help them own their future. This is the primary reason we transformed our business—to better serve them."
Q&A: What's been the biggest factor to your success?
May: "I've been very fortunate in my career in two key ways. First, I've had the opportunity to work under many dynamic and visionary leaders who each brought a different perspective to performance improvement. Learning from them helped me develop a holistic understanding of how to design and implement performance improvement projects that address key challenges to better serve clients. Second, I've been lucky enough to work within a wide array of healthcare verticals—from hospitals and health systems to group purchasing organizations, information technology companies and other consultancies."
