The 2017 Global Leaders in Consulting: Julia Harrison

Ask Julia Harrison, a Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting, her greatest professional accomplishment and she'll say—without a doubt—the fact that FTI Consulting has been recognized as the fastest-growing mid-size company in Belgium by Trends-Tendances, the leading economics magazine in Belgium," Harrison says. "It's a reflection of the tremendous efforts made by the entire team to provide our clients with the best possible advice in what has been a complex and challenging political and economic environment."

But she says her absolute proudest achievement is being a mum to Nicholas, her 20-year-old son, and watching his many wonderful achievements. "Professionally I have always gained the most satisfaction from helping to develop the careers of many talented younger people, and watching them fly, whether it is within FTI Consulting or elsewhere," she says.

Harrison is based in Brussels where she works in the Strategic Communications practice.

A political communications specialist, she specializes in board-level advice and was previously CEO Europe of an international consultancy. She has 30 years public affairs experience and has worked at the highest level across sectors and industries.

"It's only worth doing something if you are going to do it well," Harrison says.

The biggest factor to her success "is connecting the dots and always thinking constructively, whether it is in developing the business or working for clients," Harrison says. "I have also been fortunate to be part of some great teams and enjoy the advice from some wonderful mentors."

Harrison is British and has an MA Cantab in English Literature from Downing College, Cambridge. She is a founding board member of the Women's Forum for the Economy and Society. Julia has held various Non-Executive Director and leadership roles and was Vice Chair of Downing College Campaign Committee and their successful fund raising campaign.

"There aren't too many jobs where you can say that no two days are ever the same, but this is definitely one of them," she says.

"Clients always have different challenges, and the changing macro environment means that my job is always unpredictable and keeps me on my toes," Harrison says.

Q&A: What does being recognized as a Global Leader in Consulting mean to you? Your firm? Your clients?

Harrison: "I am delighted to receive this award. It is just as much a reflection of the growth and success of FTI Consulting in Brussels as it is about my own personal story. I am very proud of what we have been able to accomplish and of the difference I have tried to make, both professionally and personally, throughout that time."
