In summing up the state of retail, perhaps IBM's Consumer Industry Center-of-Competence Leader Karl Haller, said it best: "I think that 2017 will go down as a watershed year. When we look back, we will realize that this is the year that the industry woke up to the fact that the way many retailers have been operating for the past 20 years is not the way they will be successful in the next 20 years."
Consulting's business writer Eric Krell highlights ve key storylines to watch in 2018 and beyond, including a continu- ation of consolidation, as well as the trend of more industry leaders actually coming from outside the retail space. It's a fascinating read and begins on Page 10.

Meanwhile, this is Consulting magazine's 11th year honoring The Women Leaders in Consult- ing. We began this award back in 2007 because we thought it was long overdue. Eleven years and 128 Women Leaders awards later, we're more convinced than ever that it was. And today, we are even more committed than ever to promoting the collective impact of women leaders in the consulting profession—even though statistics say woman make up only about a quarter of the entire industry.
Over the last 11 years, the Women Leaders in Consulting award and gala has become, in our opinion, Consulting mag- azine's most important and most impactful initiative. Starting with just a handful of nominations in its first year, the award has grown steadily each year. I'm proud to say this year we received nearly 400 nominations. This year's honorees, high- lighted by Protiviti's Nancy Pechloff, this year's Lifetime Achievement Award winner, are in very rare company, indeed.
This year's winners are highlighted in a 30-page section beginning on Page 18. Photos of the gala dinner begin on 38.
