Gregg Schoppman
Principal
FMI Consulting
Excellence in Healthcare
As a Principal with FMI Consulting, A Raleigh, N.C.-based provider of management consulting and investment banking services to the worldwide construction industry, Gregg Schoppman specializes in the areas of productivity and project management. He also leads FMI's project management consulting practice, which serves the engineering and construction sector—truly the engine for growth around the world, Schoppman says.
"Seeing how we impact our clients work on some of the greatest construction endeavors is awe-inspiring and humbling at the same time," he says. "When you work in a building, drive across a bridge or even think about the infrastructure to get our water, and you realize you had a small impact on those marvels is an amazing feeling."
What's also an amazing feeling, he says, is seeing the resurgence that's happening in the construction industry, of late. Schoppman says he can think of several recent engagements that at the outset, seemed very daunting.
"Deeply rooted behaviors, low morale, overworked, no structure, no 'tools'—you name it… a cacophony of worst case scenarios," he says. "Twelve months in we are seeing dramatic transformations in both culture and bottom line profitability. I had a client tell me that he was shocked to see the light bulbs go on, and more importantly, how impressed he was that everyone is sticking with the changes and 'owning it.'
And that's something that has always been a sticking point in the construction industry, he says.
Prior to joining FMI, Schoppman served as a senior project manager for a general contracting firm in central Florida. He has completed complex and sophisticated construction projects in the medical, pharmaceutical, office, heavy civil, industrial, manufacturing, and multi-family markets.
He has also worked as a construction manager and managed direct labor. Furthermore, he has expertise in numerous contract delivery methods as well as knowledge of many geographical markets.
Ask him what makes him successful, and Schoppman says he has a lot of great people around him that work with him and support him.
With a firm the size of FMI (about 160 employees), Schoppman says FMI doesn't necessarily hire people in droves, but has hired several recently as the firm continues to expand. "When we make a decision to bring in a talented individual, it has to be correct," he says. "Seeing them succeed internally with other FMI associates and externally with our clients is tremendously rewarding."
To that end, Schoppman says the team at FMI deserves the Top 25 Consultants Award just as much, if not more, than he does."We have an amazing team I work with at FMI, I would be nothing without them," he says.
What do you enjoy about the work that you do?
"I've been around the business for about 20 years (construction). I've always been fascinated by the industry and the accomplishments of this outstanding business. However, the aspect of my work I enjoy the most is our customer base. There is truly no greater group of owners, leaders, managers, superintendents, etc. in any industry. More importantly, it is seeing the aforementioned "light bulb" go on, or a client telling you of the positive impact you had. As trite as that may sound, it lights me up when you hear that. It makes all of the travel nightmares worth it."
