Brian Sanderson feels incredibly blessed that he gets to have meaningful interactions with leaders in the healthcare industry on a daily basis. "I don't know of any other professional situation in which I'd be given the opportunity to have conversations at the highest level of our industry so frequently," he says. "They are people who have already achieved so much and I get the opportunity to help them achieve even more."

It's gratifying because healthcare is one of the most dynamic, fluid and integral industries, he says.

Sanderson is the National Managing Partner for Healthcare Services at Crowe Horwath where his responsibilities include the overall management and direction of audit, tax and consulting services within the healthcare sector—which includes hospitals, health systems, physician groups and for-profit providers.

"The work we do affects millions of patients and healthcare workers. Although most of our consulting work is financial in nature, it is the finances that allow for investments in clinical facilities, sufficient staffing on hospital floors and the ability to provide care to the un- and underinsured," Sanderson says.

"There's an old saying used frequently in religion-centered hospitals—'no money, no mission.' Through the work we do, we are able to help organizations improve their ability to fund these missions."

Sanderson's personal client service work is focused on helping organizations improve revenue performance, with specific emphasis on revenue cycle and charge capture. "I am most proud that our Healthcare Services team has consistently delivered on our promise to bring value to our clients," he says. "Our work has been consistently validated through receiving exceptionally high ratings on our client satisfaction surveys."
Since he joined in 2009, Crowe's healthcare practice has grown at more than 20 percent annually.

"We have also delivered on our goal to substantially grow our business by focusing on what we do best—delivering a triple threat of industry-specific expertise, process improvement knowledge and the application of applied technology," Sanderson says. "These achievements have allowed us to provide our clients with the best possible service, as well as created leadership opportunities for our talented, committed professionals."

Sanderson says he views the Top 25 Award as an affirmation that "we are all making a difference in our industry, for our clients and for our people," he says. "Each day we strive to perform with focus—focus on what's important to our clients, on what we do best and on providing opportunities for our people to achieve. This kind of recognition validates that we've been successful in our focus."

What's the biggest factor to your success? What motivates you to excel?

"My personal success is tied to what I enjoy the most – developing relationships. The interactions I have at all levels, from senior client executives to line managers to Crowe personnel, are the best part of every day. They are also likely the most important component of success. Consulting is a "people" business and clients hire the people they trust. The degree to which our consulting practices can foster relationships built upon trust will determine our success."
