11. Alvarez & Marsal
After a three-year hiatus, Alvarez & Marsal is back on the Best Firms to Work For list, this time one spot higher than when it was No. 12 back in 2009. For 30 years, A&M has been one of the leaders in corporate restructuring where the firm works with executives, boards and stakeholders to "transform obstacles into opportunities and help reinvent organizations in times of significant change," says Tom Elsenbrook, CEO of the firm's Business Consulting Division.
"To be included among the Best Firms to Work For validates our unique, entrepreneurial approach to serving as business advisors or in management roles," he says.
The timing of the Best Firms award couldn't be better as later this year, A&M will celebrate its 30th anniversary, a "major milestone anniversary that's just the beginning of building a legacy firm that will continue to redefine the way consulting gets done," Elsenbrook says.
Meanwhile, Lawrence Hutter, CEO of Alvarez & Marsal's European Corporate Solutions, says: "We think of ourselves as the biggest start-up in the history of the professional services industry and, based on the experience and business insight we bring, very much a practice of our time," he says. "[Our goal over the next 12 months is] to help more of the world's most respected brands and the Global 1,000 solve their most complex challenges."
Growth, of course, means opportunities for employees so morale remains high, even amid tepid growth in the macro-economy, Elsenbrook says. "In the war on talent, our ability to recruit 'A' players reflects the growing strength and understanding of our brand," he says. "But we like to remind everyone that growth is a by-product, not the goal. It's the result of helping our clients and professionals achieve meaningful change and satisfaction."
The firm's tremendous growth in markets around the world reflects a demand for a "different" kind of consulting and an "edgier" place to work, says Hutter. "Companies are recognizing they are operating in a world where the only constant is change, and that they must be able to adapt quickly in order to successfully compete," Hutter says. "A&M is ready to help them do so at a moment's notice."
A&M will continue to grow organically to better address the needs of clients, Elsenbrook says. "But A&M consultants recognize that simply telling the client what they want to hear does not add value," he says. "That's why organizations look to A&M to help find the right answer when the stakes are high and action matters."
ON THIS YEAR'S SURVEY, THE FIRM SCORED HIGHEST IN THE AREAS OF CLIENT ENGAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
Lawrence Hutter, CEO of Alvarez & Marsal's European Corporate Solutions, says: "A&M's professionals combine practical operating experience with top-tier advisory skills. They bring deep business insight that allows us to get to the heart of client challenges quickly and arrive at the right solutions. In situations where leadership makes all the difference, we have proven time and again that we are ready and able to step in and guide our client leadership teams effectively."
