Consulting magazine's Top 25 Consultants Award has been around since 2000. Well, that's not entirely accurate, the concept of the Top 25 actually launched in 1999 as The Top 10 Most Influential Consultants. Ten grew to 25 in 2000 and we were off and running and the Top 25 Consultants as a brand, in and of itself, began the following year.
As with many endeavors, the Top 25 started small those first few years, but as the award grew in popularity, importance and stature, so did the very definition of what it means to be a Top 25 Consultant. By the time I took over as Editor-in-Chief in 2007, the Top 25 brand was firmly established as the Gold Standard of individual recognition in the profession. To date, we've awarded 350 Top 25 Awards, plus 10 more Most Influential Consultants. Each year, we receive somewhere between 400 and 500 nominations for those coveted 25 spots.
But as prestigious as the award has been through the years, we had a feeling back in 2009 that it could be even more. And boy, were we right! That year, after much internal debate, we launched a new brand associated with the Top 25—The Consulting magazine Achievement Awards: The Top 25 Consultants Dinner.
And even though that inaugural Top 25 dinner was held in some of the profession's darkest days in terms of the economy, the dinner was a big success! All but three of the winners—and almost 100 people attended that first dinner. But that was then and this, as they say, is now. To our great pleasure, The Top 25 Awards Dinner, now in its fifth year, has grown every single year. This year's dinner was no exception and was the largest ever. All 25 winners and some 220 people jammed the ballroom of the JW Marriott Essex House Hotel in New York on June 20.
This year we recognized The Top 25 consultants for their prowess in six client industries—Healthcare, Public Sector, Technology, Energy, Retail and Financial Services—as well as for their Excellence in Client Service and Leadership.
