Excellence in Leadership

When Maureen Scholl, CEO for the Health Care Exchanges at Aon Hewitt, thinks about Aon's accomplishments, she says she is most proud of the role the firm is playing in shaping the future of the healthcare marketplace.

"It feels great to be part of a team that is leading the way on private exchanges, something we think has the potential to reform the way health care is ultimately delivered in the U.S.," she says. "We have been at the forefront of finding new and innovative approaches to help companies determine their future path in healthcare, and that includes private health exchanges—where individuals can choose health coverage from multiple carriers and multiple price points."

To her point, Aon's retiree health exchange, Aon Hewitt Navigators, has serviced more than 250,000 retirees since 2010 and offers access to more than 80 insurance carriers and 3,300 different plans. Aon's corporate health exchange—which enables participants to buy group-based health coverage from multiple carriers—is the nation's first corporate exchange model of its kind that is in operation today.

"After two years of planning, more than 100,000 employees enrolled in health benefits through the corporate exchange last fall," she says. "The employer and employee feedback we've received for both exchanges has been amazing.

Such as: Almost 80 percent of enrollees in the corporate exchange felt confident they chose the health plan that offered the best value for them and their family; and, of the retirees Aon Hewitt Navigators served in 2012, 92 percent indicated they were satisfied with their overall experience.

"This is an incredible accomplishment and one that I am very proud of, particularly since private exchanges are still new and emerging models in the healthcare industry," Scholl says. "The biggest factor to my success is—hands down—my team. I am privileged to work with brilliant people who helped bring these exchange models to life."

Scholl says she is motivated by learning every day, something that is easy when you're dealing private health exchanges, which are completely new offerings in the market.
"This brings huge learning opportunities for us, and it makes it really exciting to come into work every day," Scholl says. "The other thing that motivates me and my team is having the opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future of healthcare.

Aon Hewitt was the first company to offer a multi-carrier corporate health exchange for large employers. "Launching something new and innovative, and then successfully executing the model during this year's enrollment, was hugely rewarding," she says. "To be selected for this award is such a great honor and a testament to the whole company."
