Jim Lewis
Managing Partner and CEO
Cumberland Consulting Group
Excellence in Leadership
Jim Lewis is Managing Partner and CEO of Cumberland Consulting Group and has 26 years of consulting experience and more than 30 years of technology implementation experience. He founded Cumberland in 2004. Since then, the firm has consistently been ranked among the profession's best small firms and consistently works with the top health organizations.
"During the past year, Cumberland has worked with some of the nation's largest health organizations, to help bring thousands of physicians and hundreds of health care facilities live on Electronic Medical Records, Practice Management and Financial systems," Lewis says. "Our team gains great reward from the role we play in helping providers improve patient care and the delivery of healthcare nationwide by establishing innovative ways of sharing and utilizing health information."
In 2012, Cumberland grew from 148 employees to 174 employees in 26 states, added the firm's eighth and ninth partners and achieved revenue exceeding $36 million, a 30 percent increase from 2011.
It also secured several industry honors, such as Top Meaningful Use Consulting firm in the nation for Team Implementation Leadership and Advisory; Best in KLAS as the nation's top provider of IT Planning and Assessment services from KLAS Enterprises; Inc. Magazine's 5,000 Fastest-Growing Companies: Inc. Magazine; and was named one of Consulting magazine's Best Small Firms to Work For.
"We love the work that we do and building a firm that embraces that concept makes every day fun and exciting," Lewis says. "Making a real difference in the delivery of patient care, the success of our clients and in the lives of our team members."
Lewis says the firm has learned through the years that it is uncommon for companies of its size and structure to offer the level of transparency it does do by sharing its business plans, growth strategies and financial details with all Cumberland employees.
"We have done that since the day we started the business and have learned that our employees really appreciate it, even on the occasions when the news isn't completely rosy," he says. "Our unique culture, personal commitment, strong client relationships and the quality and value of our work differentiates us and sets us apart from the competition. We are a lean, low overhead, results-oriented business."
To that end, Lewis says winning the Top 25 award "is a wonderful recognition and reminder that a small firm and dedicated people can really make a difference in our profession," he says.
"As I mentioned before, I love the work that we do and it is particularly gratifying to be honored by people that truly understand the business of consulting."
Q&A: What's the biggest factor to your success?
"Excellent client service and exceeding client expectations are our top priorities. We believe our company's success lies in being true to that principle and not allowing competing priorities to distract us. We work very hard to maintain a strong identity and stay focused on what we do (and what we don't do). Sometimes that means saying no to a tempting opportunity but in the long run, the market recognizes top quality delivery. We also recruit and retain the best talent. Any consulting firm is only as good as its consultants. We embrace that concept – it is a driver for everything we do."
