14) Cumberland Consulting
This year marks the fourth time Cumberland Consulting has been a Best Small Firm to Work For. Cumberland first appeared on the Best Small Firms to Work For list in 2008. At that time, Cumberland had only 45 consultants.
Today, it has 160 and counting. And Jim Lewis, Cumberland's CEO and Managing Partner, says it will probably reach 200 by year's end.
"We see great opportunities to increase the size and scope of existing engagements and promising new client opportunities that will further strengthen our national presence," Lewis says. "We expect to see more exciting innovation in how our clients use patient and operational data and advancements in Health Information Exchange at the community, state and national levels across the health care continuum."
Since the company was founded in 2004, Lewis says Cumberland has focused primarily on companies headquartered in the Southeast and Midwest. "This year, we have successfully initiated plans for national expansion, and we continue to strengthen our national presence and are working with health organizations headquartered from coast-to-coast," he says. "Our top priority now is to continue our growth in conjunction with excellent client service.
In addition, Cumberland will maintain a sharp focus on recruiting, developing and retaining top industry talent, Lewis says. And those factors are even more important with the type of firm that Cumberland is, Lewis says. "We are a lean, low overhead, results-oriented business," he says. "Our team brings top-notch experience and skills and delivers excellent results at a value and with the personal services that larger firms cannot provide."
And even as it grows and expands, Cumberland will make sure it never loses what's special about the firm. "Making Cumberland a great place to work has always been a top priority since our firm's founding," Lewis says. "Our fourth recognition this year is especially rewarding and validates our efforts to preserve Cumberland's unique culture in spite of our company's rapid growth."

Jim Lewis, CEO and Managing Partner, says: "We are a motivated team. We enjoy our work and share our success. We feel our employees deserve outstanding benefits and routinely solicit feedback from the team as to how we can further enhance our benefits package and offerings to promote happy, healthy consultants. We are continuously expanding professional development programs ranging from internal training modules to professional certifications and continuing education opportunities. Our firm's partners maintain hands-on involvement in the performance management process for consultants at all levels throughout the organization. We are proud to be a place where talented people can grow.
We consistently receive positive feedback from the staff about our company meetings. We offer a great deal of transparency by sharing business plans, growth strategies and financial details with all Cumberland employees."
