Daniel Herman 9) Aspen Advisors

Denver-based healthcare IT firm Aspen Advisors is a Best Small Firm to Work For for the first time in 2012. Ask Daniel Herman, Founder and Managing Principal of Aspen, the reason and he'll be quick to point out that the firm is focused on what management consulting was meant to be.

"We remember, and do, what consultants are supposed to do: identify problems, define and implement solutions, collaborate with colleagues and clients, work with client leaders to be a catalyst for sustainable organizational change, transfer knowledge and move on," he says. "It's not a new approach but an often forgotten one. This means real consulting as trusted advisors and great career opportunities."

As far as the "trusted advisor" aspect, Herman says Aspen recently launched a more formalized client review process to promote "open, objective dialogue with clients regarding our performance."

The goal, he says, is to continually improve and make each engagement the client's best experience with a consulting firm. A lofty goal, for sure, but achievable, he says. One of Aspen's clients described the firm as "client-focused, open-minded, straight-shooting, and ego-free." That type of client feedback, no doubt, is one of the reasons the firm's employees gave Aspen such high marks on the survey.

Aspen Advisors Headquarters "Our team is made up of industry veterans and rising stars, and we are united by high expectations and a complete commitment to the industry," Herman says. "We are most excited about the opportunities to bring our varied histories, perspectives, and broad skills to each assignment and work with industry leaders who are using healthcare technology to foster innovation and make meaningful change."

As far as the award recognition itself, Herman calls it a tremendous honor and great recognition of the culture at Aspen Advisors. "We're all focused on ingenuity to deliver practical results, intensity toward client success, and integrity above all," Herman says.

"This is the core of why Aspen is a great place to work. We are fortunate to be entrusted by healthcare organizations across the country to address their information technology and performance improvement challenges, and we are having fun and growing our careers doing it. This Best Small Firms to Work For recognition will further energize our team."

Q&A: On this year's survey, the firm excelled in the areas of Culture and Career Development. Why is that?

Daniel S. Herman, Founder and Managing Principal, says: "Culture and career development are our top priorities. We're providing the best consultants in the healthcare industry endless opportunities for professional growth and personal challenge in their careers.
