James Roth 7) Huron Consulting Group

Huron Consulting Group has plenty of reasons to celebrate. For starters, the firm turned 10 years old earlier this year. To mark the occasion, the firm took a little time to celebrate and provided sometime off for our its employees to support 33 community service events with 31 different organizations across the globe, says James Roth, CEO and President of Huron Consulting Group.

That effort, and the energy it created firm wide, was cited by many of the Huron employees that took this year's Best Firms to Work survey. That positive feedback and community outreach surrounding the firm's anniversary was a big part of the reason Huron moved up in the ranking three spots this year.

"Being chosen as a Best Firm to Work For is a great indication that we are doing the right things to help our clients and our people succeed," Roth says. "We can't be successful in the market if we don't have the most talented people, and being successful in the market helps us attract and retain the best people. The two go hand in hand."

Huron Consulting Group Headquarters One of the main internal initiatives around the anniversary was to rejuvenate Huron's corporate values and focus more keenly on leadership development, says James K. Rojas, Huron's Chief Operating Officer.

"The 10-year anniversary has given us an opportunity to think about our evolution over the years, and more importantly, consider what kind of culture we want to create for the future," says Rojas. "We wanted to ensure that our values resonate with leadership and employees."

To achieve that end, the firm brought together a cross-functional team made up of employees at all levels and from all business areas and spent time defining its values. "We are thrilled with the output as it is now being infused into all of our processes around recruitment, performance management and leadership development," Rojas says.

It's probably no surprise, then, that Huron excelled in the areas of Leadership Development and Work/Life Balance on the survey.

"We're very pleased that these areas surface as two of our strengths because they validate our approach to doing business," Roth says. "We make resources available that help our personnel achieve a proper work/life balance, and we try to provide our people with the tools they need to let their own commitment chart their career progression."

That internal commitment, of course, has lead to external success, Roth says. "The investments we make in professional development are paying benefits for the careers of our people and the quality of work that we provide," he says. "We continue to experience significant growth and have had a very successful first decade of existence. We are looking forward to the next 10 years."

Q&A: What excites you most about the future of the firm?

James Roth, CEO & President of Huron, says: "We're excited about a lot of things. First, we are building a great team around a high-performing culture. We are gratified to be attracting some very talented people who are ready to join a company that works hard at both client service and community service. Second, we are excited about the opportunities for us to provide value to our clients as they undergo very significant changes to their industries. Changes in the marketplace are always good for consulting firms. Third, we are excited about competing in a rapidly changing and uncertain environment. This is a great time to be in the consulting business."
