6) Deloitte Consulting
Jim Moffatt, Chairman and CEO of Deloitte Consulting, has had a pretty busy year. After taking over his current role last spring, Moffatt helped revamp the firm's strategy, fine-tuned its position in the market, and invested in growth—both organically and through acquisition. In addition, he oversaw the opening of Deloitte University—a 700,000 square-foot state-of-the-art campus—where some 10,000 practitioners receive almost 230,000 hours of learning.
Moffatt says Deloitte is incredibly dedicated to its people and their careers, and that's one of the biggest reasons the firm, even at more than 15,000 consultants, keeps turning up near the top of the Best Firms to Work For list. This year marks four years in a row for Deloitte, and the last three the firm has been ranked No. 6 or higher.
"While our organization grows bigger, we'll make sure it still has a small feel by staying true to our values and making our people feel connected and engaged in every aspect of our business," Moffatt says. "This recognition is tremendously rewarding. It reinforces that we're staying true to our core beliefs and focusing on the right things."
As a leader, he says, the recognition motivates him to do even more and he has no intention of resting on his laurels. "We'll continue to work hard to offer our people more opportunities for growth and leadership," Moffatt says. "And as our organization grows, we'll make sure they all feel connected and engaged so they help drive the direction we take."
And that direction appears to be up. Deloitte has had very strong performance in the first half of 2012 and he says he's excited to see opportunities in areas such as analytics, social media, mobile technology, cloud computing, and cross-border collaboration as clients become global.
"The satisfaction and morale of our people is very high right now," Moffatt says. "We can credit this to our commitment to keeping our practitioners engaged with challenging growth opportunities, and letting them know that what's important to them is important to us."
Q&A: On this year's survey, Deloitte Consulting excelled in the areas of Leadership and Culture. Why is that?
Jim Moffatt, Chairman and CEO of Deloitte Consulting, says: "As Deloitte Consulting continues to grow, transparency and connectivity have become increasingly important. We've provided our people with different forums to engage with leaders and influence the direction of our practice. In the year and a half I've been in this role, I've visited every major office across the country and many of our most important clients and client teams. During my travels, I've found that some of the best questions and ideas often come from our less tenured practitioners, and our people are given opportunities to step into leadership positions early in their careers.
As far as that culture goes, one of the things I love most about Deloitte Consulting is our culture and it is one of the things that make us truly unique. We're transparent, and engage in open and honest dialogue. We stay true to our core values of serving our clients with integrity and excellence, investing in our people for life, believing in and fostering our partnership, and giving back to our communities."
