Innovation in business is sort of like the weather—everybody's talking about it but is anybody actually doing anything about it? Or, at least very few are actually succeeding in doing anything about it.

Nicholas J. Webb takes on the failure of innovation in The Innovation Playbook: A Revolution in Business Excellence . Webb, the founder and President of Lassen Innovation, a management and innovation consulting firm, details why so many organizations can't achieve successful innovation, even though some 84 percent of top business leaders think innovation is critical to their company's success.

Webb then lays out his solutions to achieving success through innovation, such as creating net customer value and creating a digital innovation culture. In the end, as it is with most corporate initiatives, it requires top-level buy-in, dedicated leaders and clear-cut communication around implementation and goals to carry out a successful innovation strategy.
