In her 20 years with Hewitt Associates (now Aon Hewitt), Mary Moreland has seen her share of changes and challenges. "To be in consulting, you obviously have to love working with people and you have to love new challenges," Moreland says. "The retirement landscape is changing rapidly. There are so many elements—whether it's new pension funding regulations, continued market volatility or economic concerns—that influence what we, as consultants, do every day. I love coming up with new ways that can help my clients solve their most pressing business challenges."
And, as Hewitt's North American Region Leader for Retirement & Investment Consulting, that's just what she does.
In her role, Moreland is responsible for developing and managing Hewitt's North American retirement strategy; ensuring clients receive exceptional customer service; identifying opportunities to expand and grow the business; and improving productivity across the practice. She is also the lead actuary for some of Hewitt's largest retirement clients.
One of the most rewarding things about her job, she says, is her long-standing client relationships—some more than 15 years. "In those cases, I'm not only providing technical expertise, but I'm able to offer solutions with a full understanding of my clients' business," she says. "Having these kinds of relationships enables me to add real value."
At Aon Hewitt, Moreland is a member of the North American and Global Consulting Leadership Teams and a member of the Executive Committee where she says she's very passionate about developing people. "One of the first people I interviewed when I became a manager was just promoted to a principal," Moreland says. "It's very fulfilling to know you've had a part in shaping someone's career."
Moreland says finding a great mentor and role model is key for women in consulting. "As a woman and as a working mother, it's difficult to balance a demanding career and a family.
A good support system is critical. I'm lucky to work at Aon Hewitt because they've worked hard to create an environment where women can thrive professionally."
