Infinitive The third time's a charm for Infinitive, an operations management firm in Dulles, Va. In its third consecutive year on the Best Small Firms to Work For list, the 50-person firm clocks in at No. 4—its highest ranking ever.

"I think this award sends a positive message to our employees, clients, and recruits," says Denis McFarlane, CEO and founder of Infinitive. "Clearly, it helps in recruiting, but it's also a nice reminder to our employees of the many things we try to do to make their career with us more enjoyable and meaningful. Clients, too, are impressed with it. They know when they hire Infinitive; they'll get happier and higher caliber consultants."

McFarlane says firm morale is good, "certainly better than a year ago," and the firm is growing and hiring. "Our consultants are getting exciting projects, longer assignments, and feel they play an instrumental role in the success of their client and Infinitive." The survey backs that up. Infinitive scored a shiny 4.81 out of a possible 5.0 in the The Job section of the survey. McFarlane attributes that to two factors: "Our emphasis on business development over this past year has enabled us to continue to get exciting projects for our folks," he says. "We can offer employees interesting, meaningful, and exciting client engagements."

Another reason, he says, is the firm has recently started two other companies within the Infinitive family: Infinitive Federal and Infinitive Analytics. "These new businesses have enabled us to acquire new clients and get new types of work," McFarlane says. "This has created new opportunities for Infinitive, as well as each individual employee."
All of this, he says, points to even better days ahead. "I am excited about opportunities in the next 12 months," McFarlane says. "We hope to see 20 percent growth in 2011."
