Skillstorm After debuting on the Best Small Firms to Work For list at No. 9 last year, San Diego-based SkillStorm rises six sports to No. 3 this year. The reason? "From the very beginning, SkillStorm has had an 'employees first' mentality," says CEO Vince Virga. "After all, happy employees equal happy clients. We make sure to create a sense of family for our team and offer them an opportunity to grow their careers, not just a job. Our people are our greatest resource; without them, SkillStorm would not be as successful as it is today."

Virga says the Best Firms survey is the best measure of SkillStorm's success and being on the list two years in a row means that "we must be doing something right—this award proves that our outstanding benefits and 'out of the box' perks are well received."

Those "out of the box" benefits include cash prizes, vacations, bonuses and the SkillStorm Dream Team, which is an exclusive club that recognizes top performers and rewards them with all-expenses paid trips. This year, the SkillStorm Dream Team is traveling to Cancun, Mexico.

But SkillStorm also does the nuts-and-bolts HR functions very well. In this year's survey, SkillStorm took the second spot in the Career Development category, scoring an impressive 4.78 out of a 5.0. "We take our employees' career growth and development very seriously." Virga says. "Our company offers several customized training and career management programs that merge the goals of SkillStorm with those of the individual employee."

It's this attention to detail, Virga says, that keeps SkillStorm on top, where it plans to stay. "Over the next year, SkillStorm will be in a tremendous growth pattern," he says. "And we are reaching out to all of our clients and asking them to grade our services so that we can take steps to strengthen these relationships and build new ones." —J.K
