April May 1999 The last ten years have brought greater awareness and strides toward making the profession more diverse. Most firms have diversity initiatives with goals of attracting and retaining more women and ethnic minorities.

While great progress has been made, there is still much to do. For example, women account for 47 percent of the U.S. workforce, but only about 28 percent of the U.S. consulting workforce.

Split by ethnicity, whites account for just over half of the general population, but almost 80 percent of the U.S. consulting market. Firms that want to continue to attract the best and brightest need to continue to push to make their firms as diverse as the broader population.

To recognize the profession's top firms, Consulting launched its Women Leaders in Consulting awards in 2007 and the Excellence in Diversity awards in 2008.
