Cover July/August 2009 The HR consulting marketplace was upended in June 2009 when Watson Wyatt and Towers Perrin announced their intention to merge. Combined, their HR consulting practice would have revenues of just over $2.5 billion.

When outsourcing and non-HR consulting businesses are added, the firm would have total revenues of approximately $3.5 billion. The new publicly listed company to be called Towers Watson & Co. could stand to emerge as the world's second largest HR consulting practice (behind only Mercer HR).

However, like any merger of its size, there are cultural, integration and staff retention risks.
