As one of the more difficult economic years in recent memory draws to a close, we simply refuse to go out with a whimper. To close out the year, we bring you this Special 10th Anniversary issue of Consulting magazine. It was a little over ten years ago (February 1999 to be exact) that Consulting first rolled off the presses with the stated mission to be the voice of the consulting profession.
Today, the mission statement is still intact, and the publication's place in the profession is firmly established and growing. While most of us are eager to put recent events behind us and move full-speed ahead into 2010, allow us a little time to look back over a decade that has helped shape the profession. (And yes, it included two significant recessions.)
While we're well aware that it's difficult—and perhaps a bit dangerous—to boil down any decade into a nifty little list of the ten biggest stories, that's just what we did. That Top 10 Stories of the Decade is included as part of a special section designed to be a stroll down memory lane.
We also put together a bit of a retrospective of some of the most impactful editorial endeavors we do each year. It's hard to believe that a little over a decade ago there was no annual ranking of the Best Firms to Work For and no yearly listing of Top 25 Consultants, two of the magazine's most highly anticipated features each year. Both of those brands are stronger than ever. The Top 25 Consultants, as a matter of fact, expanded in 2009 to include a gala award's dinner. That's right, growth!
And speaking of gala awards dinners: Consulting magazine's third-annual Women Leaders in Consulting Achievement Awards was held in New York on Nov. 12. Once again, the industry gathered at the Waldorf=Astoria to honor eight new recipients. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Accenture's Jeanne Harris, who began her consulting career more than 32 years ago. Other winners included Marcy Beitle of A.T. Kearney and Lynne Doughtie of KPMG for Leadership, Capgemini's Sherry Jones and IBM's Robin Tomlin for Client Service, as well as Future Leader Award winners Erika Serow of Bain & Company, North Highland's Kristen Vennum and Olivia Wakefield Lee of Towers Perrin.
While we're just as eager as many of you are to put 2009 in the rear view mirror and move on to new possibilities in 2010, we thought it best to send a so-so year off with a bang! So we did.
