Holy Spirit Hospital (HSH), a progressive 326-bed acute care facility located in Camp Hill, Pa., was in the process of implementing several advanced Eclipsys applications when they engaged Vitalize Consulting Solutions (VCS), a Kennett Square, Pa.-based healthcare IT consultancy, to assist with project management and to help bring the pieces of the project together under an aggressive timeline.
Challenge: Solutions to be implemented at HSH included: computerized physician order entry (CPOE), knowledge-based charting, clinical documentation, order sets, knowledge-based medication charting (KBMA), secure health messaging, device integration, and ExitCare. With multiple projects underway, the hospital's Clinical Information Systems manager simply had no time to do it all—manage the Eclipsys project, mentor his team and handle the various stakeholder issues.
Solution: HSH decided to turn the Eclipsys project over to a VCS project manager so the hospital's clinical information systems manager could meet other responsibilities. Management of
the project also included mentoring the team, teaching testing processes, and prioritizing the work on a daily basis. HSH said that VCS was able to come in and deliver productive work on day one.
Result: With the project in good hands, HSH's manager was able to focus his attention on his "real job," which includes vendor contract management, technical infrastructure and long-range planning. With VCS and HSH working as partners on the Eclipsys implementation, several major goals were achieved, including: CPOE in 100 percent inpatient units within four months; 30 percent inpatient orders were CPOE by the end of the engagement; and, the hospital activated knowledge-based charting.
