The Ever-Shrinking Pay Package
The quartiles in the chart are ranked from left to right. Partners in Quartile 1 include high-end partners, senior partners, and those in boutique strategy firms who saw their salaries kicked up in the last couple of years as the War for Talent raged on. However, several factors brought these salaries back to earth, including the dot-coms bust and the economic slowdown.
Partners in Quartile 4 are new partners or those working at small to midsize firms. Their salaries stayed pretty much in line with what they were making in 2000, because they weren't making as much to begin with.
