Industry Leaders
Succeeding in Uncertain Times
Dell Computer, Amgen, Coca-Cola, and Colgate-Palmolive have been identified as extraordinary performers that have been able to operate at the top of their industries despite uncertain times. The "Global Manufacturing 100 Report" by Deloitte Research and HOLT Value Associates sought to identify which companies manage to keep their eyes on today's dynamic business needs while positioning for the opportunities of tomorrow.
The list identifies the 100 top performers from a list of the 1,000 largest manufacturing enterprises around the world as ranked by sales. Dell made it to the top for the following reasons, among others:
• Dell is capitalizing on tough economic conditions to improve its market position and drive out competition.
• The company has invested heavily to create and maintain durable relationships with its key customers in the business and institutional segments that account for about 90 percent of its sales.
• It has created a supply chain that enables the company to respond quickly to unforeseen changes in demand.
Current performance remains solid, as Dell rapidly adjusts production volumes in its assemble-to-order chain, and cash flow return on investment minus cost of capital hovers at about 22 percent — or more than seven times higher than the industry average of three percent.
