In late 1998, Steve Smith was approached by the chief technology officer of a Big Five firm. The CTO's problem: He was concerned about emerging competitors from the ranks of upstart e-consultancies. As a member of this Big Five firm's competitive intelligence (CI) unit, Smith worked closely with the CTO to gather as much information on these emerging firms as possible and to keep a close eye on their growth. Thanks to this information, the CTO and other senior people in the firm were able to begin to develop a battle plan that could respond to this new competitive threat.
