Editor's Note
When I was younger, I thought real estate agents had the best jobs. It wasn't because I had an interest in buying and selling homes — I was simply curious about how the inside of other people's homes looked. I think that was part of the fun of putting together "The Best Consulting Firms to Work For." We got to peek inside the living rooms — and even the closets — of the most heralded consulting firms in the U.S.
This feature is the culmination of five months of research, interviewing, and analysis. Our mission was straightforward: Identify the employers of choice from within the consulting profession. Our hope is that in seeing us highlight best practices and share consultants' concerns, the profession will find this issue a substantial ally in their quest to improve the lives and careers of their people.
This project was an education for us. The nuances of the firms' different cultures began to emerge with each response we received. We read wonderful stories about the things coworkers do to support one another, and how managers often extend themselves to make their consultants happy. Some of these thoughts were so insightful and good-humored that we felt we'd be remiss not to share them with you. You'll find them on page 38.
We couldn't have accomplished this project without help. This includes the cooperation of the consulting firms that opened their doors and assisted us in surveying their employees, and the 4,040 professionals who took the time to write heartfelt comments. Special appreciation goes to the analysts within our sister company, Kennedy Information Research Group, who shared their expertise — and particularly to Joshua Randall, who supplied the statistical horsepower we needed to filter a mountain of data.
As an incentive to encourage responses to our survey, we raffled off a digital camera. The winner is Jim Whitehurst — coincidentally, an Atlanta-based project manager for our Number One Best Firm to Work For.
We hope you enjoy peeking into the living rooms — and closets — as much as we did.
