You're flight's already an hour late, and you're not exactly sure where your client's new headquarters is located. Avoid the hassle with a portable GPS, one you can take with you in the rental car during the week and then can help you find the theme park as you dash home in time for the weekend. Here are a few of the top portable products:
Magellan Maestro 4250
$399.99, www.magellangps.com
The Magellan Maestro offers the same capabilities of many of its competitors: traffic functions, Bluetooth, voice control and the ability to search for points of interest. Unlike some of its competitors, though, it comes with maps of Canada, in addition to the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Its most notable feature, however, is a car charger that when used, allows the user to get updated traffic conditions. The Maestro also can come in handy when looking for a last-minute place to eat or sleep, as it comes complete with AAA TourBook Guide information.
Navigon 2100 Max
$299, www.experiencenavigon.com
The Navigon 2100 Max is not to be confused with the Navigon 2100. This newer model addresses some of the functionality issues users had with its predecessor. The Max offers a larger screen and lane assistance, and does so for a price that beats the popular TomTom. The Navigon model offers voice command and frequent map updates, and is one to consider if your lead foot has gotten you in trouble before: a speedometer can let you know when you've got too far too fast. Hopefully that feature will keep you from using its other notable feature: emergency assistance.
Garmin Nuvi 200
$199.99, https://buy.garmin.com/shop/
The Garmin Nuvi is designed to be stylish and functional. The device has pre-loaded U.S. (no Alaska) and Puerto Rico maps that are available in 2-D or 3-D. Get assistance with turn-by-turn voice directions, and customize your route by programming the Nuvi to tell you where school zones—or even traffic cameras—are. This handy device also features a picture viewer, time zone data and a currency converter, as well as an anti-theft feature. Comes in silver or pink.
TomTom GO 930
$499.95, www.tomtom.com
While pretty pricey, this TomTom model is a consultant's—or any data lover's—dream. The historical traffic data generates an optimal route for your trip. This model also features entry via voice and integrated Bluetooth, allowing you to keep your hands on the wheel—and still call the client to let him know that you're actually running a little early. And the 3-D intersection renderings and lane assistance will free up any backseat drivers to simply take in the view. The TomTom also offers a number of accessories to enhance your navigational experience.
