Portable DVD Players
When the in-flight movie has been the same one for your past six flights, it might be time to take over the controls—of your video watching, that is. With a portable DVD player, you can use that time on the plane to watch what you want to. This month, we look a few options for making the most of that Netflix subscription.Sony DVP-FX820
$199.99
This new offering from Sony has a six-hour battery life and an 8-inch screen with 800×480 resolution. A swivel screen will ward off any over-friendly seatmates. However, if you're feeling generous, there is an extra headphone outlet for shared sound. This 2.4-pound player can provide entertainment in the rental car (unless you're the driver) or the hotel room, with a car charger and AC adapter included. And it's certain to come in your favorite color, be that black, white, blue, pink or red.
LG DP781
$209.99
The smallest weight-wise (1.8 pounds), this handy player has some great features: a swivel screen and a USB port among them. The resolution— 800X600—improves picture quality, which many online users are raving about—although there are some complaints about the sound quality. This model came out last year, so you may be able to get a bargain.
Panasonic DVD-LS86
$199.95
With a whopping 13 hours of playback time, this is the one for overseas flights. With an 8.5-inch screen—and a resolution of 480×234—and only 2 pounds, Panasonic's release is certainly portable—and it pivots as well. Adjust the brightness as needed, and listen to CDs when you don't feel like watching anything at all.
Philips PET1030
$279.99
Looking to supersize your screen? Check out this Philips model, which weighs in at 3 pounds and boasts a 10.2-inch screen (800×480 resolution). This model also swivels and has shared sound capability, among other standard features. What's special about the Philips model is that it has capabilities for not only playing music CDs but also sharing photos. A USB port gives it additional compatibility options, and even allows you to charge other devices, like cameras and MP3 players while on the road. It was also ahead of its time, as this model's been out for a few years.
