Bill Albert, the academic-turned-consultant who helped establish Marakon Associates and supply the brash start-up with some intellectual edge, died at the age of 81 this past March. The firm today recognizes Albert as the father of its value-based management and managing for value offerings. According to Marakon Managing Director Jim McTaggart, the firm's creation was in part due to a chance encounter between him and Albert, who wound up standing next to each other in line at the Seattle airport in 1974. Four years later, McTaggart and Albert would establish Marakon with colleagues Peter Kontes and Jim McGrath.
