The Origins of Loyalty Rewards:
When It Comes to Consultants, It's the "Chicken or the Egg" Riddle

Is your loyalty up for sale? If you are one of the frequently flying members of the consulting profession, a recent survey conducted by Consulting Magazine appears to indicate that it may very well be — at least when it comes to preferred airlines. A quick look at the accompanying charts reveals that the airlines consultants prefer most are also where they bank the most frequent-flier miles. Then again, simple consumer logic begs the question, If consultants routinely use airlines they prefer best, why wouldn't they have the most frequent-flier miles with those airlines?

Given that Westin, The Four Seasons, and The Ritz Carlton are counted as the top three favorite hotels among consultants, the economy lodging industry might appear to be somewhat at odds with the consulting industry's eager appetite for luxury. Nonetheless, among those consultants who stayed at modestly priced hotels over the past 12 months, certain hotels fared better than others. Certainly, Holiday Inn Express shouldn't be sweating it, having received failing grades from only a scant 4 percent of consultants. Meanwhile, in light of the fact that Motel 6 can be counted among the country's most aggressive cost champions, consultants may want to remain mindful of the old maxim, You get what you pay for.
