3 - Pittiglio Rabin Todd & McGrath
John Simmons, a principal at Pittiglio Rabin Todd & McGrath, left the firm in 2000 to start his own company. Despite the fact that his venture was successful, Simmons says that there was no question in his mind that he wanted to return to the firm two years later.
"PRTM's environment is as nonpolitical as it gets, and I have tremendous respect for the people I work with," says 35-year-old Simmons, who has been with the firm for seven years. "That was a real factor in my decision to return."
PRTM focuses on operations and process-related work predominantly for technology companies. Officials boast of the fast track to partnership. It takes PRTMers six to eight years to get to the top, compared to the standard eight to 12 years at other firms. Each individual is hired with the assumption that he or she will make partner one day.
Because a constant on-site presence is part of PRTM's business model, most of its consultants will spend four days of the week away from the family. However, managers will try to assign cases closer to home for those who have traveled for several months on client engagements. The workload is high, but analysts, associates, and managers do not work on weekends. Based on consultant requests, PRTM recently implemented an extended leave program. For example, Kivanc Emiroglu, a 29-year-old associate consultant, is currently on an education leave, attending London Business School for his MBA. Last year, Emiroglu, a Turkish citizen, was required to go back to Turkey for five weeks to do mandatory military service. But if the firm had not let him apply his future vacation time, he would have had to do 12 months.
The entrepreneurial, fiscally conservative culture means that everyone is expected to contribute to firm development, including intellectual capital/property, benchmarking studies, and marketing. Associate consultant Amelia Wright admits, "This creates more work in addition to the client work, but it also gives you the opportunity to become an expert in certain areas and be recognized as a major contributor to the firm."
