At 59, Mel Bergstein may not seem the appropriate subject for a coming-of-age story. But DiamondCluster's CEO has now landed a starring role in an epic of his own making. Nearly a year after marrying his Diamond Technology Partners to Cluster Consulting of Barcelona, Bergstein, a former Accenture partner, has emerged as the champion of the public ownership consulting model.
"The real issue is that partnerships cannot create the type of financial incentives for their people that publicly held companies can," says Bergstein, who admits that stock can also help a consultancy to cut deals, such as the one it clinched with Cluster.
Back ministering to his troops — the Diamond faithful — Bergstein speaks reverently of a governance structure that is now the envy of many consultancies rooted in Big Five accountancy. Most analysts agree that it's no longer a question of whether the Big Five legacy firms will borrow a page from Bergstein's playbook, but simply a matter of when.
