On May 5, 2022, Consulting magazine and Mavenlink+Kimble assembled a group of leading industry executives for an engaging conversation on how to examine and optimize resources and processes in order to maximize their most valuable resource — People.

The panel considered the issue during a roundtable discussion moderated by Consulting's Michael Webb. If you were unable to attend, you may register and access the webinar on-demand here.

What was learned during the discussion? Here is a brief recap of some of the key takeaways from the discussion:

  • Regarding the nature of the "Great Resignation"— even from its intensity last year, it is likely to be a temporary fluctuation. It could be looked at as a reaction from professionals looking for something to control in a world where very much still seemed out of their control during the pandemic.
  • The average labor tenure is at its lowest—4.1 years and less than that if you are under 35. You cannot "keep" talent forever now, so we should think about how to strategically engage for outcomes, vs. considering the entire workforce as a permanent entity.
  • Consider the value of re-skilling and ongoing learning. A core of the workforce is always going to be full-time and there is real value and developing and maintaining institutional knowledge, but we will have to do it differently than in the past.
  • Younger professionals are being shown to be less "sticky" in their commitment to an organization. So for those professionals – especially in Gen Z, we may be likely to see more frequent turnover compared to prior generations if we organizations aren't able to align with their values.
  • Focus on burnout and wellbeing is likely indicative of the larger shift that organizations must take on. Many companies are pivoting fast on this.
  • One of the most surprising elements arising from the panel was learning that the nature of remote work will mean that the recruiting pool for highly qualified and successful talent will extend to include professionals well into their 80s—meaning the breadth of the competitive landscape will grow to immense proportions.
  • A supply chain orientation in thinking about talent is paramount. The Digital Revolution is driving skills demand to a point where no one has all the qualified talent they need. Every business, every industry, has to make the transformation. Within the Networked Economy, there lives a new, enlightened, talent ecosystem that is emerging. Firms participate in this network in different ways. The new way of working during the pandemic has opened everyone's eyes to the possibilities.
