Barb Marder Mercer
Excellence in Technology
Barb Marder says she’s been fortunate that Mercer has given her many different career opportunities. She’s been with the firm for 30 years and has had a variety of different leadership roles across many of Mercer’s businesses. Marder started as an actuary in Mercer’s Wealth Business and now she is an actuary-turned-innovator. She also led Mercer’s International Consulting Group and Mercer’s Global Mobility business.
“I’ve always been on the lookout and raised my hand for stretch opportunities, and I’m not afraid to take career risks when presented,” she says. “I’m proud of the fact that I’ve been able to demonstrate value to Mercer in many different roles and I am very appreciative of all the opportunities.”
Marder, Senior Partner of Mercer, is the Digital Tools Leader and previously led Mercer’s Innovation Hub, which was created to develop new offerings and take new services to the market by bringing forward capabilities across Mercer’s lines of business.
“For the past two years I led a team in Mercer’s Innovation Hub, focused on disruptive solutions in recruiting and talent acquisition. Last May, she helped launch Mercer Match, a job matching and career advice app that uses gamification, neuroscience and machine learning to pre-qualify candidates and match them to sales and customer service roles. “It was exciting to launch our innovation, take it to the market and see the enthusiastic response.”
Marder says the Mercer Innovation Hub is very fast paced and she loves that every day is different. “I’m always learning something new. But, at the core, it’s all still about solving clients’ problems—and that has been enjoyable throughout my career.”
Marder says she truly enjoys creating new solutions and bringing them to the market, especially those that leverage cutting-edge technology. “I am motivated when a Mercer colleague or client is excited about something new we’ve developed and that I’ve helped bring to the market.”
In addition to Mercer providing her with many different career opportunities, she says she’s also been fortunate to work for a firm like Mercer that has given her the work/life balance and flexibility to pursue and continue to develop her professional career while also raising two children.
“It was certainly crazy at times but with a supportive employer, husband, parents and great kids it all worked out well. And, I was able to do this while juggling my family responsibilities,” Marder says. “I’ve also focused on developing strong and trusted relationships with colleagues so that we share in each other’s success and know we can count on each other.”
Q&A: What does winning the Top 25 award mean to you, your firm and your clients?
Marder: “Winning this award feels amazing! It is so wonderful to be recognized for my 30-year consulting career but also specifically recognized for ‘Excellence in Technology’ related to my leadership role in our Innovation Hub. Mercer is on the forefront of creating disruptive technologies around the Future of Work and this is great recognition of the energy and passion I, and Mercer, have for finding new and innovative ways to help solve our clients’ problems.”
