The 2016 Top 25 Consultants: Joe Decilveo, Jr.

Joe Decilveo, Jr. RSM Excellence in Client Service

With more than 30 years of professional service providing audit, financial and litigation consulting services to some of the largest companies in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia under his belt, Joe Decilveo Jr. is someone people turn to when stakes are high. His expertise is frequently tapped in areas around regulatory investigations, plea agreements, shareholder litigation, commercial disputes and other potentially thorny situations.

Decilveo joined RSM in 2011 with a small team of professionals to build and grow a litigation consulting practice to complement RSM’s Chicago-based bankruptcy/insolvency practice. Under his leadership, the practice has grown from fewer than 10 to more than 70 professionals, from one partner in one office to five partners in offices in nearly 10 cities.

Decilveo says he’s proud of the growth of RSM’s litigation consulting practice over the last 12 months, and how he’s helped bring the practice to the next level. “We were geographically disunited, and today we operate as a national practice. Things now work a little differently, our people are excited about where we’re going, and the changes we’ve made have helped us grow and better meet the needs of our clients,” he says.

The secret sauce to his success, Decilveo says boils down to perseverance, patience, and adaptability. “Things change over time, and you have to be adaptable. You need patience with respect to how fast you can implement adjustments to how you do things and how fast you can make the necessary adjustments for those that work with you. Lastly, you have to persevere and accept the limitations imposed by the changes. Every road is not going to be a road that leads to the success you anticipate,” he says.

As is the case with so many of our Top 25 Consultants, Decilveo is quick to credit his team and mentors he’s worked with over his career as enablers and encourages of his success. “I’ve been very fortunate during my career to have worked with some great mentors and outstanding team members, and they’ve played an important part in any success I’ve been able to achieve.”

As for his favorite aspect of the consulting profession, Decilveo says variety is key. “I enjoy the flexibility consulting provides to pursue different disciplines, and the flexibility in your personal life. Also, no engagement is ever identical to ones that came before it―they require customized solutions. In our profession, we work to understand our clients’ complex challenges, regardless of the industry or the client’s size, and I enjoy that,” he says.

Winning the award, he says, is a benchmark for the firm and its clients. “The Top 25 award is something that’s admirable… What it means to me is that a lot of years of opportunity and work in this profession has been recognized by a peer group that I respect.”

What motivates you to excel?

“In litigation and dispute consulting, we deal with complex situations that require investigation and simplification to present concise, yet comprehensive, analysis. That can be challenging, however, I enjoy working with the complex and am motivated to conquer the challenges.”
