Excellence in Client Service
This past year, one of Alex Liu’s teams won A.T. Kearney’s “Great Client Work” global award—for the second time in four years—for best overall client service and impact.
“It made me incredibly proud, both for the results we delivered to our client and for the internal recognition that the team received,” Liu says. “I have also taken on global leadership of our Communications, Media & Technology Practice and have been invited to join the Board of a publicly-held telecommunications company as a non-executive director, as of July.”
Liu is a Partner at A.T. Kearney and is serving on the Board of Directors in his second elected term. He has more than 25 years of consulting experience working for leading technology, media, and global communications companies in the areas of strategy, organization, performance improvement, marketing, and operations.
Liu is well known for his work in next-generation cost and performance improvement for telecom companies in North and South America, Asia, and Australia and for global alliances and go-to-market strategies for technology and software suppliers based in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. Prior to A.T. Kearney, Alex was the CEO and a board member of an IP-based telecom and software service provider and a partner with The Boston Consulting Group, helping establish the firm’s Asian operations outside of Japan in the 1990s.
Liu says he’s proud of the fact that over his career he’s done a variety of work and helped launch several consulting practices. “In doing so, I have worked with many loyal and repeat clients in multi-year business transformations, a number of which have resulted in multi-billion dollars in impact,” Liu says. “I have also had the privilege of being elected by my fellow partners for two consecutive terms to our Board of Directors.”
Motivating him to excel, Liu says, is “the classic immigrant and Asian guilt and insecurity, so I always feel there’s more I can do and impact.”
And ask him what he likes about the consulting profession and he’ll respond: the variety. “Every day is different, every client situation is a new opportunity, every solution is a new challenge, and every colleague is amazing in some way, and always great fun. This profession is pure Red Bull,” he says. “And clients tell us they like that we deliver high-impact results, collaboratively and authentically. I just hope to be a role model in delivering that promise.”
As for winning the Top 25 award after more than a 25-year career, Liu says: “This is a great recognition of the value we deliver to our clients and a much-appreciated honor that I happily share with my colleagues. But, as the director Martin Scorsese said in collecting his award, “…what took you so long?”
What would you say is the biggest factor to your success?
“Balancing work and play is essential to avoiding burnout. In solving problems, I find that taking an unpretentious approach leads to the best results. And, of course, a willingness to endure crazy travel on a regular basis is essential; on average, I circle the globe twice a month.”
